October 29, 2009: The ACE/OWHE Delaware State Network honored LeNora Ruffin, Simone Marie George, and Lisa Dunning during the network' Fall Dinner and Awards Ceremony, held on October 29, 2009, at Wilmington University, Dover, Delaware. Simone Marie George, and Lisa Dunning both won the Rising Star Award, which is presented to two women in higher education whose potential to achieve more is evident. LeNora Ruffin, was the winner of Delaware’s Leadership Award. The Leadership Award is presented annually to a women in higher education on the basis of her leadership activities and the significant contributions she has made to the field of higher education in Delaware.
LeNora Ruffin (Leadership Award Winner) is the Assistant Dean for Career Development at Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, Delaware. Originally from the Bronx, New York, she attended the University of Pennsylvania where she received her B.A. in 1990 and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1993. As Assistant Dean, Ruffin performs substantial outreach to legal communities through professional affiliations in local and national organizations and is responsible for coordinating, implementing and evaluating strategies to maintain and increase the exposure of Widener students and alumni. Under Ruffin’s leadership, the Career Development Office has coordinated a successful mentoring program which has matched over 1200 first year law students with alumni mentors. In addition, in an effort to prepare Widener’s students for today’s market, she introduced and supervised the development of a professional development series including workshops on networking, branding, business development, professional etiquette and a mock interview program.
Simone Marie George (Rising Star Award Winner) is assistant to the Wilmington University President, Dr. Jack P. Varsalona. In this capacity she handles community relations, external affaris, government affairs and acts as a copywriter for the president. She also represents the University, speaking at various meetings and events throughout the community on behalf of the president. In 2010, Simon will begin teaching part time in the Universitiy’s College of Business.
Lisa Dunning (Rising Star Award Winner) is the Director of the Advisement Center in the College of Business at Delaware State University. A leader in fostering the personal growth and professional development of college students, she has the opportunity to guide student academic and career choices to acquire meaningful internships and employment opportunities in a broad range of business fields. Dunning manages academic advisement services for 600 undergraduate business students. She is committed to unparalleled student-oriented customer service.
Donna Burns Phillips, Director of the Office of Women in Higher Education, attended the awards ceremony and noted that these women are truly exemplary.
